About this car
Sold on Bring a Trailer on September 30, 2026 for $240,000. The car is in Chicago, IL. Its final price and sale date are recorded here as sold-price data, the same as a dealer's sold car. The full gallery and listing details come from the car's own auction page.
What the photos show
- light blue paint looks glossy and straight in the studio shots, no repaint money needed on the panels shown
- chrome bumpers and trim look bright, but one hubcap trim ring is kerb-rashed, a small wheel refurb cost, not a chrome bill
- navy leather seats front and rear look clean with light creasing only, no retrim money needed
- dash wood looks warm and glossy with the Becker Europa and Behr air conditioning in place, no dash work needed
- navy soft top shown raised is taut and even, and the leather top boot looks good, no top money needed
- there is a rust scab on the sill below the front wing and rust staining around the firewall grommets in the engine bay corner, so budget for localised rust repair behind the shiny paint
- the engine bay is only shown in one tight corner shot, so I can't judge the whole engine or its detailing costs
- no underside photos in the sample, so I can't judge the floors for rust money beyond the sill scab that is visible
- the last gallery slots are 1988 service paperwork, which supports the car's history rather than its current condition
Money: at the $240,000 sold price, this is a handsome, usable 3.5 cabriolet, but the sill and firewall rust spots say some body money is still ahead, unlike the fully finished car that made $320,000 in the same shard.

Condition: 1971 Mercedes 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet 99,000 documented miles Clean history Sadly it’s time to move on from a family heirloom car. This 280SE has been in my family for over 30 years, and has been a pleasure to use over the years. It has the 3.5L V8 which is both torquey and smooth. A significant upgrade
