About this car
This 1957 190SL is offered on eBay by mbvcars in Elyria, OH. The asking price is $29,500. The car is finished in Red over White, a manual gearbox. The odometer shows 88,016 miles. On a 190SL, look for rust in the floors and around the battery box, and check that the carburetors are set up properly.
What the photos show
- Faded red paint is the least of it: the front fenders and nose are rusted through with large holes, so complete front bodywork fabrication is the entry cost.
- One door is a mismatched black panel and the rear quarters are holed at the arches and valance, so panel replacement money runs the full length of the car.
- The front bumper is off the car and shown lying on the floor, dull and dented, so refitting and rechroming money is certain, assuming all the loose pieces are actually included.
- Black hardtop is present and looks intact, so that piece at least is included value rather than spend.
- No soft top is shown in the sampled photos, so soft top condition can't be judged.
- Dash is complete with wheel, gauges and radio, but everything is filthy and worn, so a full interior restoration is coming.
- Door cards are stained and sagging, and the seats are not shown close in the sampled photos, so seat cost can't be judged separately from the full retrim this car needs.
- Engine bay is corroded throughout, with a rusty air cleaner, taped intake hose and rust on the firewall and inner fender, so assume a full engine rebuild and bay restoration.
- Underside photos show frame and floor metal flaking apart and holed in section after section, so the structure itself needs rebuilding, not patching.
- Steel wheels are rusty and the whitewalls are cracked and flat-spotted, so wheels and tires are replacement money too, small as that is next to the body.
- Several gallery photos are screenshots with the viewer arrows still visible, so photo quality is poor, though the rust needs no imagination to see.
Money: at $29,500 this is the roughest car in the shard — the photos show a parts-level shell whose restoration would cost many times the price; it only makes sense as a donor or a money-no-object rebuild.
