About this car
1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible listed on eBay in Clearwater, FL. Listing shows 188,000 miles shown, Manual transmission, Orange exterior. Asking price $9,000 on eBay.
What the photos show
- Red-orange paint is glossy on the main panels and the body looks straight — no respray budget for the panels themselves.
- Rust shows at the low edges: black rust patches break through both sills and the rear lower quarters, and there is a line of rust holes along the top of the passenger door under the window trim — budget for sill, quarter and door-top rust repair, this is the main spend.
- The passenger door mirror is missing, leaving just its mount — small replacement money.
- White top is up in every shot, fabric grubby and stained-looking though it sits taut, and the rear window is cloudy — budget a deep clean and possibly a window, not a full top from these photos.
- Bumpers are chrome but dull and pitted with extra driving lamps mounted on the front one; alloy wheels are dirty and tires look aged with grime in the tread — budget chrome work and check tire dates in person.
- Cream seats are intact but dirty and crazed, the radio is missing leaving a hole in the orange dash panel, and the centre console trim is broken — budget interior tidying and a dash repair.
- The driver's door card is missing entirely, exposing a rusty inner door shell — budget a door card and inner-door rust treatment.
- Engine bay is complete but dusty and aged, with paint peeling on the rear apron and rust spots under the decklid — budget a service and detail; running condition can't be judged from photos.
- No underside photos in the gallery — can't judge it, and with visible sill rust that lift inspection is essential, hold back money for it.
Money: at $9,000 the glossy paint is the come-on, but sill and door-top rust, a missing door card and mirror, and a grubby top are real spends — price it as a project until the underside is seen.

Karmann, the German coachbuilder, approached the Italian design firm Ghia in the early 1950s and together they built a prototype on a Beetle chassis without telling Volkswagen. When they unveiled it, the VW executives were so taken with it that they committed to production immediately. The car went on sale in 1955, ran for 20 years with almost no changes to the body, an
