About this car
1974 Volkswagen Thing at Classic VW Bugs in Congers, NY, $18,500 OBO. Numbers-matching 1600cc dual-port engine, all-new brake components and a new muffler; described by the dealer as a solid, turnkey car.
What the photos show
- Yellow paint is glossy and even on the flat panels all round — no paint budget from these photos, apart from a few pin chips shown close up on one fender.
- Black soft top looks taut and clean with clear side-curtain windows — no top replacement budget from these photos.
- Whitewall tires with chrome hubcaps look clean; the spare in the front trunk looks older and worn — budget for a spare if that matters.
- Front trunk and engine lid paint is glossy yellow and tidy, fuel tank clean — no trunk paint spend from these photos.
- Painted door inners and floors look solid; the black floor pan by the pedals shows only light surface rust dust — no floor budget from these photos.
- Underside pan on a lift is black-coated and solid with no holes showing — no pan budget from this photo.
- Seats are barely shown in this set — can't judge the upholstery, hold back money for that check.
- Engine is only shown in one tight pulley close-up with rusty pulley edges — the full bay can't be judged, hold back money for that inspection.
Money: paint, top and underside back the $18,500 ask; the open items are the unseen seats and full engine bay, plus a worn spare.
