About this car
This 1966 230SL is offered on eBay by beverlyhillscarclub in Los Angeles, CA. The asking price is $44,500. The car is finished in Havana Brown, a manual gearbox. The listing does not state a mileage. As with any Pagoda, the floors, sills and spare-wheel well deserve a close look for rust, and the soft-top frame and hardtop seals are worth checking.
What the photos show
- the dark brown paint looks glossy and deep with straight panels all round, so no paint money needed
- the chrome bumpers and hubcaps look bright and clean, so no chrome bill
- the tan soft top looks clean and taut with a clear rear window, so no top spend
- the matching hardtop is shown fitted and looks glossy, which adds value
- the tan seats look clean with no tears or sagging showing, and it is a manual gearbox car, which supports the price
- the dashboard and gauges look tidy and original, so no dash spend
- the trunk floor under the mat looks black-painted and clean with no rust showing, so no trunk repair bill
- the engine bay looks tidy and complete with no heavy corrosion showing, so no bay spend on what is visible
- can't judge the underside — no underside photos in the set I viewed, so a lift check is still worth the money
Money: at $44,500 this brown manual car shows none of the rust of the other 230SL at the same price; on photos alone it is the better buy of the two.

Condition: 1966 Mercedes Benz 230L This pagoda is a running and driving project that was delivered from the factory in what I think is the best color combination of Silver on dark blue. This unit is equipped with a manual gearbox and is generally solid. It will need some rust repair in floor pan but is otherwise quite straight. Obviously, the paint is shot and the interior will need to be redone. A previous owner fitted a 280 badge but I have confirmed with Mercedes classic that the car is a 230 and have a copy of the cardex.
