| Condition | 1966 Mercedes Benz 230L This pagoda is a running and driving project that was delivered from the factory in what I think is the best color combination of Silver on dark blue. This unit is equipped with a manual gearbox and is generally solid. It will need some rust repair in floor pan but is otherwise quite straight. Obviously, the paint is shot and the interior will need to be redone. A previous owner fitted a 280 badge but I have confirmed with Mercedes classic that the car is a 230 and have a copy of the cardex. |

About this car
This 1966 230SL is offered on eBay by classics-rescue in Dallas, TX. The asking price is $49,000. The car is a manual gearbox. The odometer shows 47,719 miles. The eBay title does not name the model; the car's VIN identifies it as a 230SL. As with any Pagoda, the floors, sills and spare-wheel well deserve a close look for rust, and the soft-top frame and hardtop seals are worth checking.
What the photos show
- The trunk badge in the photos reads 280 SL while the listing title says 230SL, so verify what you are actually buying before any money moves.
- Silver paint is dull and the trunk lid paint is peeling and flaking badly, so budget paint work at the rear at least.
- The rear bumper is bent and dented on the left, so budget bumper repair or replacement.
- The soft-top well is empty with no fabric top visible and its surround is rusty and brown, so budget a new top and rust repair around the well.
- The matching silver hardtop is fitted in most photos and looks straight, no hardtop to hunt down.
- Black seats look good and recently trimmed, no need to reupholster.
- Dash top is worn and the carpets are dirty and partly missing, so budget interior finishing.
- Can't judge the engine bay from these photos - none of the twelve photos shows it - so budget a full mechanical inspection.
- Can't judge the underside from these photos, so the rust question stays open.
Money: at $49,000 the badge mismatch, peeling paint, bent bumper, missing soft top and rusty top well mean the price needs the car's identity and rust checked first.
